This 17 minute video was included as a projection in our exhibition at Wollongong Art Gallery in November 2017.
The video was commissioned by us, and produced by cinematographer Hayden Griffiths from Phoenix Media.
The first part of the video shows a continuous aerial “scan” from the mouth of Allans Creek at the Port Kembla Steelworks, all the way through the suburbs where Allans Creek merges with Byarong Creek, and up into the escarpment.
The second part of the video is a selection of drone footage from various parts of Byarong Creek.
There is evidence that the course of Byarong Creek was changed by WCC apparently in the 1960’s. Redidents from near Figtree Oval say this happened at around the time Westfield Figtree was constructed.
It appears that Ghost’s Creek, which used to underpass the Princes Hwy near Geards Hill where the now bridge over the M1 is located, used to form part of (approx 200 metres) what is now Byarong Creek. The former course of Byarong on Figtree Oval can be seen when light flooding happens. Compaction of the filled in section is causing large pools of surface water at the northern end of the main cricket / AFL field.
Would be interesting to know history of any redirection of the creek that took place and if WCC has older maps showing this.
